How do roulette bets work?
Making a bet in roulette is quite simple. All you need to know is what bet you want to play.
There are two ways that players usually bet – with their gut or with a smart roulette strategy.
The bets work the same in online roulette as in the brick and mortar casino version of the game.
There are two categories of roulette bets you can make, inside bets and outside bets.
Inside bets
Any bet on the numbers field counts as inside bets. Inside refers to the inside of the numbers field at the roulette table. Inside bets have higher odds than outside bets.
There are 6 bets in total that are available for both European roulette and American roulette. Although 1 bet is unique for each type.
Straight Up Bet or Single Bet
When you bet on just one number. To make a straight-up bet all you need to do is place a chip on a single number, Red 18 for example.
Split Bet
Two straight up bets in one. You wager on two numbers next to each other instead of just one. All you need to do to place a split bet is place a chip on the line between two number squares, for example, 13 and 14.
Street Bet
A wager on three numbers appearing in a row. You make the bet by placing a chip at the end of the row. Row 7, 8, 9 is popular among many roulette players.
Corner Bet or Square Bet
Is a wager on 4 numbers adjacent to each other. You make a corner bet by placing a chip in the corner of the 4 numbers you want to wager on. For example, 19, 20, 22 and 23.
Line Bet, Six Bet or Double Street Bet
Is a bet on two rows containing 3 numbers each. The chip is placed right at the end of the two rows, between the two. 1, 2, 3 and 4, 5, 6 is one of the options you can choose.
First Four Bet
Is a roulette bet that is exclusive for a European wheel. The bet includes wagering on 0, 1, 2 and 3. Place the chip at the outer corner shared by 0-1 or 0-3 to make this roulette bet.
Five Bet or Basket Bet
Is an American roulette exclusive bet. It is a bet on the numbers 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3. The chip is placed just at the corner next to 0 and 1 to lock in the bet.
Outside bets
Outside bets are the wagers you can place outside the numbers field on the roulette table.
They involve a larger amount of numbers and therefore have lower odds.
Column Bet
Is a bet that is placed on a whole column with 12 numbers. You wager on this bet by placing a chip at the bottom of the column where there is a box that says 2 to 1.
Dozen Bet
Essentially the same bet as a column bet since you bet on 12 numbers but in order. You place your chip in one of the 3 boxes on the side that say 1st 12, 2nd 12 or 3rd 12. So instead of getting the numbers of a column, you get the numbers in order.
Bet on Color or Red or Black Bet
The bet is exactly what the name entitles, you wager on either red or black. This is probably the most famous of all roulette bets. This is a great bet to start with if you are new to roulette.
Bet on Odd/Even
Another roulette bet to cover half of the numbers just like when you wager on colour but you bet on even or odd numbers. You place a chip on the roulette table where it says either odd or even to wager. Keep in mind that 0 and 00 are not part of either even or odd.
Bet on Low/ Manque or High/ Passe
Is the last outside bet you can make. You either choose to wager on the low numbers 1-18 or the high numbers 19-36. Just like in the even/odd roulette bet the 0 is not part of either low or high.
Snake Bet
A wager that covers the numbers 1, 5, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, 23, 27, 30, 32 and 34. This bet is not available at all casinos and is a special roulette bet only offered by some. This is usually marked on the roulette table with a two-headed snake winding from 1 to 34 and you make the bet by placing a chip on either head of the snake.

Roulette Odds Explained
Now that you have seen the payouts of roulette I am sure you also want to know the real odds of you actually winning.
As with all casino games, the casino takes out a cut of each bet that’s called the house edge. Roulette odds are no different so even though the payouts are as above those aren’t your actual odds of winning.
The house edge is quite low in roulette just like in online blackjack that is also available in India.
Below you can see a chart of European roulette odds of winning and another for the American roulette odds of winning.
