The slot where Wild Toro goes after the Matador
Every time I get the slot release schedule sent to me by Manish, there’s always a moment of tension. So when I discovered the Wild Toro video slot was next up, I asked myself a question.
Is it going to be tasteless and rotten like a discarded tomato that didn’t go into the Gazpacho? Or brilliant and passionate like Penelope Cruz, a Pablo Picasso painting (personally I like his ‘Rose Period’ the best) or the Flamenco dance?
A few spins of the Wild Toro casino slot later and I knew the answer straight away.
A typically crazy video slot by those guys at Elk
The Wild Toro casino slot come to us thanks to the slot provider Elk. They’re one of the quirkier and more fun-loving slots providers out there who are responsible for such off-the-wall games as Hong Kong Tower, Taco Brothers and Bloopers, an online slot that’s all about mistakes in Hollywood movies.
I told you these guys marched to the beat of their own drum.
What I can also tell you is that they share the G2G view that a slot has to be just as good on mobile as it is on desktop. As they say on their own website:
‘’It’s amazing how much a smartphone can do…Still, there are some limits when you compare it to a desktop. But if you take that into consideration as you design new games, you can work with the capabilities instead of against the limitations.’’
You guys talk a lot of sense, Elk.
As Spanish as Paella followed by a siesta
I was curious about whether there was some background story to this slot because we remembered there was one behind Taco Brothers.
So I gave Elk a call and asked them.
Apparently, the slightly greasy-looking Matador who looks like he copied his hairstyle from a character out of ‘Grease’ and the Wild Toro used to be friends. They used to perform together but had a falling-out and the Toro is out for revenge.
You’d think that a Wild Toro would be the last animal you’d want to get angry… but there you go.
This is a 5×4 reel slot and one of the first things you’ll notice is that the background to the reels appears to be that of a sleepy little Spanish town. A little market square, a couple out on a night stroll, some smoke coming out of a chimney.
The second thing you’ll notice is how big all the symbols are. But they’re well designed and make it easy to see exactly what’s going on during each spin.
The Symbols and Flamenco music
That Matador is the Scatter, the game’s ‘Wild Toro’ logo is the Wild and then there’s the Wild Toro himself. With a huge grin, this is a brute of a Toro who appears to have visited the same barber as the Matador because it’s got a slicked-back tuft of hair at the front of its head.
Following on from the Spanish theme, there’s a red rose (the most valuable regular symbol), a lady’s fan and orange with a dagger in it. The lower value symbols are different coins: gold, silver and bronze.
If you listen carefully, you’ll hear a gentle sound of Flamenco music playing in the background. That helps explain the Flamenco-related symbols.
The only thing missing from the whole Spanish experience is that you get a big bowl of steaming, delicious Paella when you play Wild Toro.
Give Elk a couple more years and I wouldn’t put it past them to do just that.
Toro Goes Wild feature starts fiesta time
The graphics are cool enough in the Wild Toro slot but it’s the features that really caught our attention.
Wild
The game’s logo can appear on any reel and substitutes all symbols except the Matador and the Wild Toro.
Walking Wilds
Ok, ok. This isn’t the first time I’ve seen a Walking Wild. It was a feature already present in Jack and the Beanstalk a few years ago. Appearing solely on Reel 5, what happens is that the Toro will activate four extra spins if he appears in that position. One for each of the reels to his left.
He’ll then move from right to left after each spin. Because he’s Wild, he can help you get a decent win during each extra spin.
Once he’s got to the reel on the far left, he’ll leave the game.
‘‘Exit left of stage’’, as they say in the theatre.
Toro Goes Wild Bonus
Remember when I said that a Walking Wild had already been done in ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’?
Well, let me ask you this: does the Walking Wild in ‘Jack’ really compare to a huge scary-but-cheesy Bull that goes around head-butting Matadors with its giant horns?
No, I didn’t think so, either.
Each time the Wild Toro spots a Matador somewhere on the reels, he’ll charge it. Every square he passes on his way to reaching the Matador is turned into a Wild. That means the path of destruction he leaves behind with all these visible Wild symbols can lead to some big wins.
Matador Respin Challenge
I don’t particularly like the Matador. He looks a little bit full of himself. Someone who can’t be trusted.
The Wild Toro doesn’t like him much, either.
But three Matadors are good news. They activate the Matador Respin Challenge.
Here you’ll get a respin for every Matador on screen, so a minimum of three. Any more Matadors that appear on screen will give you an extra spin and the Matador stays in his initial position.
But the best is yet to come. You’re a lot more likely to activate the Wild Toro Bonus during the respins because there are automatically three Matadors on the reels. Meaning that all you need is to find that Wild Toro.
Now picture this: a Wild Toro sees its bitter rival – the Matador – in not one but three different positions. Each time it sees one it charges it like…a bull in a china shop.
The Toro Goes Wild bonus happened to me a few times while playing it and it’s great. Just sit back with a cool drink and watch that Wild Toro go about destroying those reels, leaving lots of Wilds in its wake.
This feature will continue until the Matador respins is over or until the Bull kicks out all the matador symbols from the reels.
Wild Toro right up there with the very best
It doesn’t take a genius (or genio as the Spanish would say) to work out by now that I really loved this slot. It hits that sweet spot of medium-high volatility, just like Joker Pro and Vikings Go Berzerk. It’s doesn’t slaughter you in the base game, and the features happen regularly enough to keep you interested!
I love its colourful and fun regular symbols, cheesy over-the-top special Matador and Wild Toro symbols and the accompanying Flamenco music.
But online slots are often only as good as the feature rounds that are its main attraction. A bit like the Toro is the main attraction at a bullfight.
The Walking Wild bonus round is not only quirky and funny it can also be very profitable. And if you happen to get it during the Matador Respin Challenge, you’re really in business. Sometimes you can get as long as two or three minutes of watching that Wild Toro creating havoc and your wins adding up.
Given it’s made by a lesser-known slot supplier and has such an unusual theme, it’s classic G2G stuff. But in terms of quality, it’s right up there with the big-budget slots.
